Tips on Resume Writing
60Resume writing, especially for first timers, may seem to be such a daunting task. One may even wonder how a sheet of paper can contain all the necessary information to prove to future employers that one is suitable for the job. However, some people may realize that resume writing can be easy and hassle free, all they need is just a few good tips!
Tip number 1: KISS
KISS, meaning, Keep It Short and Simple. Imagine your employers reading stacks of resumes. Obviously if you give a 10 page resume, he or she wouldn't even bother reading the whole thing. In fact, people suggest that your resume should only be one page.
One page? You Crazy?
I know that it will be difficult containing all your accomplishments within one page, but the logic is that you should "tailor fit" your resume to the company and the job you are applying to. If you want to apply in a field in finance, it will be irrelevant (and a waste of time for your employer to read) if you put something non-finance related such as writing an article for your school paper, no matter how amazing that achievement or position is.
Tip number 2: Highlight
When writing your resume, highlight the significant details on your resume. Were you president of your organization? Intern in a marketing consulting firm? Do you write for a column in a newspaper? The point of highlighting is to put emphasis on accomplishments that is relevant to the job you are applying for. Also, highlighting makes these details stand out, so the person reviewing your resume will not only notice it right away, but most probably remember it as well.
Tip number 3: Make it easy to read
Yes, it may be tempting to put such grandiose and bombastic words/sentences/etc. However, keep in mind that you want to put emphasis on your achievements and that you are perfect for the job. Unless you really do plan on becoming a writer of some sort, simple and straight to the point language is the key. Also, choose the language you are comfortable in. Yes, this tip may not apply to all countries, but in countries wherein the citizens speak more than one language, I highly suggest you use the language you are most comfortable in.
Tip number 4: Proper format
People might think that this is such an unnecessary tip, but a lot of people actually forget this part of resume writing. So, when writing your resume, make sure that the margins are properly aligned and pick a "neat" font (Arial, Times New Romans, etc.).
Tip number 5: Proofread
Even though you think your resume is perfect, there is always room for improvement, so always check it or ask someone to read it for you and to give suggestions.
So there, 5 tips to guide you on writing a resume. Hopefully these tips are helpful and help you land the job! Good luck and happy job hunting!
